2 Year Measures

Contents of this page:

Introduction

The tables below summarise the measures used in the 2 Year booklets. Each measure is identified by the booklet heading and pages, and by informal or formal names and descriptions. The number of items in each measure is shown, but note that some of these items have two or more parts, giving two or more item variables.

The final column of each table shows dataset scales that are related to each measure; each variable name here is a link that will take you to the relevant item in the 2 Year derived variables page.

44 Behaviour (Behar):
Items 2 to 44 are referred to in TEDS as the Behar items. Contemporary documentation shows that these items were previously adapted or authored by Lisa Davies for the Romanian Study, also at KCL; and that many (but not all) of the items were in turn adapted from the published Behar Preschool Behaviour Questionnaire (see reference).
In the surviving documentation, the Romanian Study sources of the items are given as (a) the Revised Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (28 items, numbered 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, 19, 22, 25-30, 32-44 in the booklet) and (b) the Revised Behar (15 items, numbered 3, 5, 6, 8, 11-13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 31). Published references for the Romanian Study measures have not been found.
All 43 of these items were repeated at age 3.

Item 1, time spent with other children, was added by Dorothy Bishop. This is distinct from the other 43 items, having different response options, and apparently not derived from the same sources.

A detailed account of the sources of items is given in the behaviour measures at ages 2, 3 and 4 (pdf).
