4 Year Measures

Contents of this page:

Introduction

The tables below summarise the measures used in the 4 Year booklets. Each measure is identified by the booklet heading and pages, and by informal or formal names and descriptions. The number of items in each measure is shown, but note that some of these items have two or more parts, giving two or more item variables.

The final column of each table shows dataset scales that are related to each measure; each variable name here is a link that will take you to the relevant item in the 4 Year derived variables page.

  • 24 items: SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), see reference (1). The item numbers in the booklet are: 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12-15, 17, 19, 20, 22, 24, 27-32, 34, 35, 48, 50.
Two of these were listed as Behar items at ages 2 and 3. The other 22 items were new to TEDS at age 4, although some replaced quite similar Behar items from ages 2 and 3.
  • 19 items: Behar. These are 19 of the 43 items included at ages 2 and 3, the remainder having been replaced by the SDQ. The Behar item numbers in the 4 Year booklet are 1, 7, 9, 21, 26, 36, 38-40, 42, 45-47, 51, 52, 54-57. See the 2 Year measures page and reference (2).
  • 12 items: ARBQ (Anxiety-Related Behaviours Questionnaire). The item numbers in the booklet are 4, 8, 16, 23, 25, 33, 37, 41, 44, 49, 53, 58. These include 4 items added by Derek Bolton in addition to the 5 items added at age 3 by Thalia Eley and Tom O'Connor. The other 3 items were listed as Behar items at ages 2 and 3. Subsequently, the set of anxiety items has been labelled as ARBQ and published in reference (3).
  • 3 items: hyperactivity. These are the same 3 items that were added by Eric Taylor at age 3 (no reference). The item numbers in the booklet are 11, 18, 43.
In other historical documentation, the RRPSPC (Revised Rutter Parent Scale for Preschool Children) is named as the source of many of the Behar and SDQ items at age 4. However, no published reference can be found for this source. See the linked document to the right for further details of item sources.
